The CSF publishes a practical guide for members representing themselves before the disciplinary committee

The CSF today published a Guide for self-represented respondents before the disciplinary committee. Designed to support professionals who are the subject of a disciplinary complaint and wish to represent themselves, without a lawyer, this guide is also an excellent resource for anyone wishing to learn more about the disciplinary process.

The guide clearly and succinctly presents the various players and stages in the process, which begins when a disciplinary complaint is lodged with the disciplinary committee. All elements are explained, including calling of the provisional roll, preliminary motions and hearings.

The content is presented in an accessible manner and follows the typical disciplinary process, with explanatory illustrations. In addition, a glossary of key terms is included at the end of the guide, with defined words highlighted throughout the text for easy retrieval.

The CSF is pleased to make this tool available, as it helps us to get closer to our various clienteles by taking their concerns into account, and to fulfill our mission of protecting the public.

The “Guide pour les intimés se représentant seuls” is available in French on the CSF website. Click here to consult it. An English version will also be published by the end of the year.

Please note that this guide is for information purposes only and does not constitute legal advice. It is also important to know that you can consult a lawyer for legal advice and assistance without necessarily being represented by one, and that a respondent who represents himself or herself may decide at any time to be represented by a lawyer instead.

About the CSF Disciplinary Committee

The Disciplinary Committee is based on disciplinary law, just like the disciplinary councils of professional orders. Its objective is to protect the public by maintaining discipline, integrity and respect for professional standards.

The role of the disciplinary committee, whose chairman is appointed by the Quebec Minister of Finance, is to hear and decide on the outcome of disciplinary complaints lodged by the CSF syndic or a third party. Members of the CSF who practice in the fields of insurance of persons, group insurance of persons, financial planning, scholarship plans or mutual funds may be subject to such complaints if they violate the “Loi sur les valeurs mobilières”, the “LDPSF” or any of their regulations.
